Selena Gomez clarifies 'dig' at Taylor Swift following NBA Finals game
Selena Gomez has responded to criticism over her comments following Taylor Swift's attendance at Game 4 of the NBA Finals in New York City.
Sports fans were given a sight to behold during Game 4 of the NBA Finals, with one of the most dramatic endings to a sports game in recent times as the New York Knicks came back from a 29-point deficit to win by a single point with one second to go.
There was already controversy surrounding Taylor Swift's attendance at the game, as Knicks commentator Monica McNutt claimed that the 'Bad Blood' artist wasn't even a fan of the NBA team.
And while she later apologized for the dismissive comment, there was more criticism online, as fans believed that Selena Gomez's comments about the game were also aimed at the artist.
The Only Murders in the Building actress sparked speculation online after many believed that she had taken a swipe at longtime friend Swift.
However, this may have been wide off the mark, as Gomez took to her Instagram story to address rumors.
Selena Gomez clarifies comments
Shortly after the game, which saw the team she supports, the San Antonio Spurs, embarrassingly throw away a sizable lead to the Knicks, she posted some short messages on social media.
She remarked that it was funny how "some are all the sudden fans," while also commenting "lol" on an Instagram post which featured a snap of Swift celebrating the historic victory.
Some took this to be a dig at her pal.
On Friday morning (June 12), Gomez clarified her actions, writing on Instagram: "Woke up and was sent so many texts.
"I would never insult my friends nor was it an insult. The comment was a reaction to the first slide on the page.
"Second I bet my friends on the game. The friends in the text chain I posted. I lost but was poking at my opponents, my friends.
"Believe it or not I do have other friends in my life. But quickly forget that most assume otherwise."
She then concluded with a statement which Spurs fans likely weren't pleased with: "Also.. It’s a basketball game."
Swift could be seen in the front row of the game with two of the sisters from rock band Haim, appearing animated as she was seen jumping and celebrating.
Fans had described Gomez's comments as "weird" at the time, given their friendship.
Selena Gomez's original comments
Following the Spurs' horrific implosion in Game 4 of the Finals, where a win would have seen them level the series at 2-2, Gomez shared a summary of the game.
The musician and actress said she was up at 3AM in London to watch the game, but her team sadly fell short, as she posted a snap of her donning a Spurs jersey at a game in the past.
She wrote: “Mad respect for the game!! Congrats to the peeps that represent! What a come back.”
Her comment which caused the commotion though, followed: “So funny how some are all the sudden fans though lol.”
Gomez then commented "lol" on MTV's Instagram post which featured snaps of the game, including one of Swift in the front row.
